Nikon Z9

This is Nikon's top-tier Z-mount body, aimed at working professionals who need speed and resolution in the same camera. The 45.7MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor gives plenty of cropping room for stills, while the electronic-only shutter design supports very fast capture without mechanical wear.

At 1,340 g and 149 mm across, it is a substantial camera. That mass buys a deep grip, a full-size HDMI port, dual card slots and weather sealing rated dust and drip resistant, which matters if you shoot outdoors for a living.

The Z9 shoots at 20 fps electronically, and its subject detection covers people, animals, birds, cars, trains, airplanes and motorcycles. That list means the camera can lock onto a rider, a bird in flight or a moving vehicle without you steering the point manually.

Pre-Release Capture buffers 1 s of action, but only in the C30 and C120 high-speed frame capture modes. That limitation is worth knowing: it is a specialty tool for timing-critical shots, not something available in every drive mode. There is no mechanical shutter, so mechanical burst figures do not apply here.

Video tops out at 8K, with 4K reaching 120 fps for slow motion. Codec support spans H.264, HEVC, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes RAW and N-RAW, and raw recording is internal, so no external recorder is required for high-end workflows.

One number to plan around: full-width 4K is capped at 30 fps. Faster 4K frame rates come with a crop, which changes your field of view. Footage is 10-bit with log support, giving colorists room to grade, though the log dynamic range is not published.

The viewfinder is 3.69 M dots at 0.8x magnification, and the rear screen is a 3.2-inch tilting panel at 2.1 M dots. Tilting rather than fully articulating matters for tripod and low-angle work, but it is less flexible for vlogging angles.

Battery life is rated 740 shots, and USB charging plus power delivery means you can top up from a laptop brick or power bank in the field. The body keeps working down to -10 °C and includes a headphone port for monitoring audio.

In-body stabilization is rated 6 stops, but only when Synchro VR is active, which combines the in-body 5-axis system with 2-axis lens VR on compatible lenses. With other lenses you get less than the headline figure, so the effective benefit depends on what you mount.

Two card slots give you backup or a split stills/video workflow, and the full-size HDMI port avoids fragile adapter cables on set. The Z9 has no high-resolution pixel-shift mode, so very large stills are not an option beyond the native sensor resolution.
