Nikon ZR

It is a full-frame mirrorless camera on Nikon's Z mount, sized like a stills body but specced like a video tool. The 24.5 MP CMOS sensor is paired with 6K maximum resolution and internal raw recording, which means footage can be graded heavily in post without falling apart.

The 4-inch rear screen is unusually large for this class, and it is fully articulated, so framing works from odd angles, gimbal use or self-recording. For a buyer moving up from a smaller-sensor camera, the full-frame sensor plus 10-bit capture is the core pitch.

Internal raw recording in ProRes RAW and N-RAW is the headline. Add HEVC and ProRes 422 HQ, 10-bit depth and a log profile rated at 15 stops of dynamic range, and the ZR gives colorists real latitude in highlights and shadows. 4K tops out at 119.88 fps, so slow motion at a standard delivery resolution is available without dropping to a lower-quality mode.

The caveats matter too. Nikon has not published a full-width 4K frame rate figure, so how the camera handles 4K across the whole sensor is unclear from the spec sheet. The HDMI port is micro, not full size, which means a fragile adapter or a dedicated micro-HDMI cable on every external-recorder or monitor job.

The electronic shutter reaches 20 fps, which is fast enough for action and wildlife, and a high-resolution pixel-shift mode is included for static subjects where maximum detail matters. Subject detection covers people, animals, birds, cars, trains, airplanes and motorcycles, so tracking is set up for a wide range of genres rather than just faces.

Two gaps stand out for stills shooters. Nikon has not published a mechanical continuous-shooting rate or a maximum mechanical shutter speed, and pre-burst capture duration is listed as 0 s, meaning the camera does not buffer frames before you press the button. Anyone who relies on a mechanical shutter or on catching the moment just before the trigger will want to weigh that.

At 630 g and roughly 134 mm wide, the ZR is light enough to hold on a gimbal or carry all day. There are two card slots, which lets you separate proxy and master files or keep recording if one card fills. Dust and drip resistance covers normal outdoor use, not heavy rain.

USB charging and power delivery means a power bank can keep a long shoot going, and a headphone port supports monitoring on set. The minimum operating temperature is 0 °C, so cold-weather work below freezing is outside the stated range. Battery life is unpublished, which makes runtime planning harder.

Several specs a video-first buyer would normally check are simply not published: release date, launch price, in-body image stabilization, sensor readout speed, and viewfinder magnification. The listed viewfinder resolution of 0 M dots and the absent EVF magnification suggest the electronic viewfinder is not a selling point here.

That changes how you compare the ZR against rivals. Rolling-shutter behavior, stabilization performance and total cost all depend on figures Nikon has not released. Until those appear, treat the ZR as a strong video spec sheet with real unknowns attached.
