Canon EOS R8vsNikon ZR: Which Camera Should You Buy?

The Nikon ZR is the clear video tool here. It reaches 6K and pushes 4K to 119.88 fps, while the Canon EOS R8 tops out at 4K 60p. That extra resolution and frame rate matter for cropping in post and for slow motion, and the R8 cannot match either.

The ZR also records ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes RAW and N-RAW internally, something the R8 does not offer at all. Both shoot 10-bit and support log profiles, so the gap is in codec flexibility and raw capture, not color depth. If the edit suite expects ProRes or raw files, the ZR is the only one of the two that delivers them in camera.

For stills shooters the Canon EOS R8 is the quicker camera. It fires at 40 fps electronically versus 20 fps on the Nikon ZR, and it adds a 0.5-second pre-burst so you can capture the moment before you press the shutter. The ZR has no pre-burst at all.

The R8 also has a higher native ISO ceiling at 102,400, which can help in very dim light when you would rather not push a file in editing. Neither camera publishes a sensor readout speed, so rolling-shutter behavior is unknown for both. Based on the published figures, the R8 is the better stills body.

The Canon EOS R8 has a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder, while the Nikon ZR has none. That is the single biggest handling difference. If you shoot handheld at eye level, the R8 gives you a familiar shooting posture; the ZR forces you onto its rear screen for every shot.

The ZR answers with a larger 4-inch screen and a much sharper 3.07-million-dot panel, versus 3 inches and 1.62 million dots on the R8. Both articulate fully. The ZR's screen is genuinely better for video monitoring and low-angle work, but it does not replace a viewfinder for bright outdoor stills.

The Canon EOS R8 is the smaller, lighter camera at 461 g versus 630 g, and it is slimmer in depth, 70 mm against 49 mm on the Nikon ZR. Wait, the ZR is shallower there. The R8 is lighter and narrower; the ZR is shorter and thinner front to back. Either way, the R8 is the easier one to carry all day.

The ZR gives you two memory card slots to the R8's one. For paid work, that means backup recording or separating stills and video without swapping cards. It is a practical advantage the R8 cannot match, and it partly explains the weight difference.

The Canon EOS R8 is the better action camera on paper. Its 40 fps electronic burst and 0.5-second pre-burst give you a better chance of catching a fast moment, and both cameras share the same subject detection list for humans, animals, birds, cars, trains, airplanes and motorcycles.

The catch is that the R8's fastest burst is electronic only, and its mechanical rate is 6 fps. The Nikon ZR does not publish a mechanical figure at all, so there is no like-for-like comparison there. For field sports and wildlife, the R8's pre-burst and higher frame rate are the deciding factors.
