Insta360 X5

The X5 uses a 0.78-inch sensor behind an f/2 lens, which is a large chip for this class. That matters for low light: a bigger sensor gathers more light, so indoor and evening footage holds up better than on smaller 360 cameras. The headline field of view reaches 170 degrees, but only in FreeFrame Video at 4K30fps.

That caveat is worth understanding before buying. FreeFrame lets you pick your own framing window after the fact rather than shooting full 360, and the extra-wide view is tied to that one mode. If you shoot standard spherical video, expect the usual 360 coverage instead.

Resolution tops out at 8K, and 4K reaches 120fps — but with a split. The 120fps figure applies to 360-degree video at 3840x1920; if you shoot single-lens 4K, the ceiling drops to 60fps. Buyers who want slow motion in flat, single-lens framing should plan around that lower limit.

Bitrate runs up to 180 Mbps in H.264 or HEVC, which gives editors more data to work with when reframing or grading. Color is 8-bit, and while HDR video is available through the built-in Active HDR in 360 Video mode, the I-Log profile is restricted to 5.7K — it is not offered at the 8K top mode. Log shooters who want maximum grading latitude will be working below the peak resolution.

Photos reach 72MP and can be saved as RAW, so there is real room to crop or correct in editing rather than accepting the camera's JPEG. For a camera built around video, that still resolution is unusually high and makes the X5 a plausible hybrid for landscape or travel stills.

Stabilization is handled in-camera, and horizon lock keeps the frame level as the camera rolls. For anyone mounting the camera on a helmet, bike or handlebar, that combination is what turns shaky footage into something watchable without a gimbal. It is the feature most buyers will feel immediately.

At 200 g and roughly 46 x 124.5 x 38.2 mm, the X5 is small enough to pocket. It is waterproof to 15m on its own, and rated to 60m only inside Insta360's Invisible Dive Case — divers need to factor that accessory into the budget. Operating range runs from -20 °C to 40 °C, so cold-weather shooting is viable.

The 2,400 mAh battery is removable, and claimed runtime reaches 208 minutes, though that requires 5.7K24fps with Endurance Mode on. Higher resolutions will not last that long. There is no built-in storage, so a memory card is mandatory; the slot accepts up to 1,024 GB.

There is a 2.5-inch rear touchscreen and no front screen at all, so framing yourself for single-lens work is limited to the rear panel. The X5 also ships without GPS, which means no automatic location or speed overlays without a phone or another device filling in.

Wi-Fi 5 handles transfers, and the microphone setup is unusual: the X5 pairs directly with Insta360's Mic Air wirelessly, with no adapter required. That is a real convenience for anyone recording voice while moving, since the alternative is usually a dongle and cable hanging off a 200 g camera.
