Insta360 X5vsDJI Osmo 360: Which 360 Camera Wins?

The Osmo 360 records 10-bit color and the X5 records 8-bit, so the DJI holds up better when you push contrast and color in editing — banding and blown gradients are less likely. The X5, though, is the only one of the two with HDR video, captured through Active HDR in 360° Video mode, which helps in high-contrast scenes straight out of camera.

On codecs, the X5 gives you H.264 alongside HEVC, which is useful if your editing machine chokes on HEVC. Its edge in bitrate — 180 Mbps against 170 — is minor. Its I-Log profile is limited to 5.7K, not the 8K top mode, so log shooters lose resolution to gain flexibility.

The DJI's 1-inch sensor and f/1.9 aperture beat the X5's 0.78-inch, f/2.0 setup on paper, and that shows up in low light and in the 120 MP stills it can capture. That resolution is a real advantage for anyone printing large or cropping hard into a 360 frame.

The catch is format. The X5 shoots RAW photos, which the Osmo 360 does not, so photographers who want to grade stills themselves have only one option here. If your tripod shots end up on a screen rather than in Lightroom, the DJI's extra pixels matter more.

The X5 carries a larger 2,400 mAh battery and claims longer recording — 208 minutes against the DJI's 190 — but that X5 figure assumes 5.7K24fps with Endurance Mode on, so treat it as a best case rather than what you'll get at 8K.

The Osmo 360 is the smaller, lighter camera by a clear margin and ships with 105 GB of built-in storage, so you can shoot before you buy a card. The X5 has none, meaning a memory card is mandatory from day one. For travel and pocketability, the DJI wins; for card-based workflows, that built-in memory is a convenience, not a replacement.

The Insta360 X5 is rated to 15 m underwater without a case, against 10 m for the Osmo 360, and it goes to 60 m inside Insta360's Invisible Dive Case. If you shoot in water, that gap is the difference between needing a housing and not.

The DJI runs to a higher maximum operating temperature, 45 °C versus 40 °C, which matters on hot shoots. Both are rated down to -20 °C, so cold weather is a tie. The X5's larger 2.5-inch rear screen is easier to frame with than the DJI's 2-inch panel.

The Osmo 360's rear screen is rated at 800 nits, bright enough to stay readable outdoors; Insta360 doesn't publish a brightness figure for the X5's larger screen, so that one is a guess until you handle both. The DJI also adds Wi-Fi 6 and 1080p live streaming, where the X5's streaming resolution isn't published.

Neither camera has GPS built in, so both rely on a phone or app for location data. Audio is a wash on paper: both list a built-in external microphone, though the X5 pairs directly with Insta360's Mic Air without an adapter.

For action use, the X5's deeper waterproof rating and pre-recording buffer of up to 90 seconds make it the easier camera to live with near water or when you can't predict the moment. Its larger screen is also simpler to operate with gloves.

The Osmo 360 fights back with less weight and a smaller body to mount, plus a wider operating temperature ceiling. Choose on where you shoot: water and cold, take the Insta360; long hot days and light rigs, take the DJI.
