GoPro MAX2vsInsta360 Ace Pro 2: Which Action Cam?

The headline number matches: both record 8K. What separates them is what you can do with the footage. The GoPro MAX2 captures 10-bit color, which gives you far more room to push exposure and color in an edit before banding shows up, and it is the only one of the two shooting a log-ready 10-bit pipeline. The Ace Pro 2 stays at 8-bit.

Where the Insta360 pulls ahead is smoothness. It hits 120 fps at 4K against the GoPro's 100 fps, and it can reach 240 fps in Slow Motion mode at 1080p, which is the difference between a usable slow-motion shot and a stuttery one. The Ace Pro 2 also writes H.264 alongside HEVC, useful if your editing machine chokes on HEVC. The GoPro's 300 Mbps ceiling only applies if you install the optional GoPro Labs firmware; out of the box it tops out at 120 Mbps, below the Insta360's 180 Mbps.

The Ace Pro 2's sensor is roughly 1.8x the size of the GoPro's, and that is the single biggest reason to pick it. A larger sensor gathers more light, so the Insta360 holds up better indoors, at dusk and in any scene where you cannot add light. It also resolves more detail per pixel when the light is good.

The GoPro's brighter f/1.8 aperture offsets some of that gap by letting in more light per unit of sensor area, though it cannot fully close it. The GoPro's field of view is not published, so there is no way to compare framing on paper. If most of your shooting is daylight action, the aperture helps; if you shoot after dark, the sensor wins.

Stills favor the Insta360 clearly. It shoots 50 MP photos and supports RAW, so you can recover highlights and shadows in post. The GoPro captures 29 MP and GoPro has not published whether it shoots RAW, which is a real gap if stills matter to you.

Screens matter more than buyers expect. The Ace Pro 2 has a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen rated at 900 nits, bright enough to frame and review in direct sun. The GoPro's rear screen is 1.82 inches, and GoPro has not published a brightness figure, so outdoor visibility is an unknown. Both have touchscreens; only the GoPro's front-facing situation is unpublished, while the Insta360 has no front screen at all.

The GoPro packs a slightly larger battery at 1,960 mAh versus 1,800 mAh, but GoPro publishes no runtime figures at all, so the capacity advantage is unproven in practice. Insta360 claims 180 minutes, though that number is for 1080p24 in Endurance Mode, not 4K, and neither maker publishes a 4K runtime. Treat runtimes as a wash on paper and expect to carry spares with either.

In the hand, the Insta360 is the smaller camera: lighter at 184 g, shorter and thinner. The GoPro is narrower but taller and chunkier. Waterproofing is not close. The Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12 m out of the box and to 60 m in the maker's case; the GoPro is rated to 5 m with no published case depth. For snorkeling or diving, only one of these is a real option.

The GoPro MAX2 is the more connected camera. It has built-in GPS, so your footage carries speed, elevation and route data without a phone, and it runs Wi-Fi 6 for faster offloads to a laptop or tablet. The Ace Pro 2 has neither GPS nor a published Wi-Fi 6 radio, so you are tethering to a phone for location data and waiting longer on transfers.

The GoPro also streams at 1080p, though that requires a paid GoPro subscription. The Insta360 lists no live streaming at all. On audio, both rely on built-in mics with no 3.5 mm jack; the GoPro can pair external mics over Bluetooth, which is a workable path for better sound if you already own wireless earbuds or a Bluetooth mic.
